The Netherlands issued its first-ever red alert for heat for Friday, warning of "dangerous" conditions as a record-setting heatwave scorched Europe.

AFP reported, the national weather institute issued the alert for much of the country, where temperatures are forecast to reach 40C in some places.

"The situation is dangerous; follow the guidance from the government and emergency services," it said.

The red alert covers eight of the country's 12 provinces, while the northern region and southern province of Zeeland will remain on orange alert.

The measures will remain in place until at least Saturday, it said.

The Dutch rail operator has reduced train service because of the high temperatures, and the infrastructure minister recommended using the roads only when absolutely necessary.
