Bangladesh Police on Saturday said social media posts claiming that the bodies of seven Awami League and Chhatra League leaders and activists were floating in Dhaka’s Turag River were completely baseless, and urged the public not to be misled by the propaganda.
The information was disclosed in a press release posted on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Police on Saturday evening.
The press release said an attempt was being made to spread confusion among the public by circulating baseless information on social media under the headline, “The bodies of seven Awami League-Chhatra League leaders and activists are floating in the Turag River.”
The statement added: “In reality, no report of any such incident has been received. Bangladesh Police is requesting everyone not to be misled by such false propaganda.”
Bangladesh Police said a group was deliberately spreading such rumours in an attempt to undermine the morale of law enforcement agencies.
The statement said the matter was being monitored seriously and police were active in taking legal action against those involved in spreading the rumour.
The press release further said police were committed to taking appropriate legal action against anyone if evidence was found of involvement in such propaganda.
